Women 2000
by Rose Michaelis
Reciprocation by Eva Avi-Yonah
To
Beethoven
by Thilde Fox, Haifa
How long,
how long, subservient will you be?
Is it
enough to taste the apple from the tree?
To exchange
sex for a fee?
for
a teaspoon of love?
To
suffer the slings of rape, beatings,
and murderous spree,
To
serve, sacrifice and sexy be.
Are
we not as clever as he?
Amass
a fortune! Sever the chain!
Never
look back!
utter
a cry!
Alas!
you’re free.
Rose Michaelis, Tel Aviv

Reciprocation by Eva Avi-Yonah
Frozen
wasp, I have warmed you to new life
and you have stung me.
Stray
cat, I have given you food and shelter
and you have scratched me.
Troubled
sister, I have helped you cope
and you have slandered me.
Velvet
rose, I cut you from your life-stem
and you have offered me your sweetest fragrance.
Eva Avi-Yonah, Jerusalem selection, November.

TO
BEETHOVEN
Thilde
Fox, Haifa
Where
do the notes live before you catch them?
Do
they hide behind the skies
till
you pluck them down and toss them out
like
catherine wheels bursting into sound?
Do
you marshal them in sober rows
obedient
to your pen,
till
they rise like shooting stars
with
trails of music singing for ever through the heavens
till
God gathers them in and sends them back for His delight?
When
you put away your pages
do
they storm your pillow
and
tease your sleep
till
you wake enchanted
and
sing again?
